The fact that most fluids in nature do no obey Navier-Stokes eqs. manifests engineering & industrial importance of non-Newtonian fluids. The 2nd and 3rd grade fluids which form a subclass of differential type fluids can predict shear thinning and thickening properties but lack other feathers such as stress relaxation and retardation. Maxwell and Oldroyd-B fluids models which are viscoelastic rate type fluids can show relaxation and retardation phenomena. Burgers' fluid which is a viscoelastic fluid model includes an Oldroyd-B, Maxwell and Newtonian fluid models as special cases. Unlike Maxwell & Oldroyd-B models, it involves the stress being differentiated twice w.r.t. upper convected derivative. It turns out that in general we need additional conditions. This issue crops up with regards to several non-Newtonian fluid models. This thesis, hence, provides a new metric of success for non-Newtonian fluids, supplemental to the viscoelastic fluids analysis. The results & analysis should help shed some light on new directions, and should be especially useful to workers who may be considering MHD flows and heat transfer problems.

This study evaluates the role of Carotid Intima-Media Thickness (CIMT) in predicting coronary artery disease in Black South Africans, and to correlate CIMT with the known risk factors for coronary artery disease, including those of the Metabolic Syndrome. Findings show that CIMT predicts the extent of coronary artery diseases as found at coronary angiography. Multiple regression analysis identified hypertension and fasting glucose as the most important determinants of CIMT. Age, obesity, smoking and LDL-Cholesterol also correlated positively with CIMT. The results suggest that in this population, hypertension and diabetes are crucial in the pathogenesis of thickening of the intima-media of carotid arteries, a surrogate marker of coronary artery disease.

Asymmetric Membrane Capsule- An Osmotic Approach

The aim of this study was to demonstrate that the asymmetric membrane capsule can be used to deliver a poorly water soluble drug with a pH sensitive solubility such as gliclazide. In order to obtain the desired delivery duration, the drug was solubilized with the use of a pH-controlling excipient. The capsule wall membrane was made by a phase inversion process, in which asymmetric membrane was formed on glass mold pins by dipping the mold pins into a coating solution containing a polymeric material followed by dipping into a quench solution. This study evaluates the influence of coating formulation that was cellulose acetate (CA), ethylcellulose (EC), and plasticizer (glycerin and PEG 600). Results show capsule that made by CA with glycerol and PEG 600, which appear in asymmetric structure and are able to release gliclazide(GLZ) in significant percentage.Based on the result, influence of core formulation variables, including D-mannitol, sodium bicarbonate and the added amount of SLS were examined on the release of GLZ. It was found that HPMC 15cp was suitable to be a thickening agent and both added amount of HPMC and SLS showed a comparable and profoundly positive effect.

The volcanoes are built up by essentially basaltic materials and are of two textural types namely: the Biu type, which is flow basalts, massive with vesicles, and the Maringa type, highly scoraceous and associated with pyroclastic deposits. Chemical analysis shows total hardness values of the waters in Biu volcanic Province ranges from 70 to 1666 mg/l indicating that the water from boreholes, wells and surface waters are moderate to very hard, therefore, not suitable for both drinking, washing and bathing. Geochemical analysis of the volcanic soil revealed the complete leaching of the major elements (CaO, K2O, MgO, MnO, and TiO2) from the surface soil probably into water sources. This may explain the extremely high Ca and K levels especially in the stream water where they display values of 348mg/l and 36 mg/l as against 200mg/l to 12 mg/l respectively of WHO admissible limits for drinking water. The accumulation of transition metals in the soil (Co 84-111ppm; Cr: 230-441ppm); Ni: 169-237ppm) is geogenic derived from the weathering of the host basaltic rock. Cr, Ni, and Cu do not easily form soluble ions in solution explaining why they display lower levels below their respective WHO admissible limits for drinking water. The absence in the soil profile and the extremely higher values of potentially harmful elements (PHEs) (As, Se, Sb, and Pb) in the spring and stream water as opposed to the lower values in the wells and borehole water suggest their extreme solubility, direct leaching and transportation of these elements from the surrounding rocks into the surface water.The higher values of Zn and Pb (10-40ppm and 246-496ppm respectively) could be explained like for Co, Cr, Ni, by their absorption and retention in clay minerals structure. Most inhabitants of the volcanic province rely on any of these available water sources for their drinking and other domestic purposes. The long-term exposure to Potentially Harmful Elements through the ingestion of water and food could have adverse health hazards. Few of the inhabitants show manifestations of nail deformity (nail thickening and brittleness), and hyper pigmentation of the skin and hand palms. Others present various forms of skin diseases (especially skin growth) which all could be attributed to exposure to As or Se toxicity.
